Gaithersburg, MD (December 16, 2022) – The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) is proud of its Montgomery College Scholarship Program. On the evening of December 8, 2022, at its Annual Celebration & Awards Dinner, the Chamber awarded $8,000 in scholarships to four Montgomery College students with majors in either Computer Science or Engineering.
“I’m so proud of our Chamber and this scholarship program,” said Paula Ross, GGCC President & CEO. “Our local economy relies on an educated workforce. These students are the future of Montgomery County, and we are very happy to support them.”
While the Chamber is proud of our accomplishments, the GGCC could not have done it without the long-time leadership of Jim Muir, Vice President at Hughes Network Systems. During his remarks, Muir encouraged other business leaders to join Hughes in this giving effort.
The Chamber’s Montgomery College Scholarship program provides financial assistance to students pursuing higher education. Each year, with the help of the Chamber’s donors, the Chamber presents scholarships at its Annual Celebration Dinner & Awards Ceremony. To date, the GGCC’s members, led by Hughes Network Systems and Jim Muir, have raised approximately $400,000 in scholarship funding to the College, including over 150,000 in endowed funds to ensure future giving for students. GGCC established the endowment at the College in 2012. The Chamber’s scholarship funds have supported 76 individual Montgomery College students, some for multiple years, filling the gap in what traditional financial aid can provide.
Muir and Nawal Benmouna, Montgomery College Department Chair for Engineering, Physics, and Computer Science, took the stage at the Chamber’s Annual Celebration to award the four students their scholarships. Dr. Jermaine F. Williams, President of Montgomery College, also provided remarks in support of the students.
The students awarded scholarships through the GGCC Scholarship fund are selected through the Montgomery College Foundation.
